about

Africa's heart beats and the people respond in song and dance. This single features two members of Lorenzo Bertocchini's band The Apple Pirates: Marco Negrelli and Dario Paini. It was originally recorded for the "Ewe Mama - Volume 1" compilation.
Here it is, remastered and available for you with cover art by Nicole Colella, an illustrator and educator who is continually fascinated by the natural world. Check out her artwork at Nicolecolella.com and email her for commissions and collaborations at nicolella12@gmail.com

"Lorenzo Bertocchini has a sardonic sense of humour, a cute poetic eye and a heart that bleeds into every note he sings. Ear-catching, thought-provoking, brutally honest, emotional, hilarious and sweet all at the same time... It's hard to put a label on him because he is a combination of many different things.
His music blends elements of folk music, blues, country and rockabilly. His lyrics mostly deal with social or romantic themes.
Although his imagination is pretty wide, you get the feeling he tells the truth in his songs".
(Kate Henderson)

THE BEAT OF AFRICA
[words and music by Lorenzo Bertocchini
- Italian words by Alice Greco]
SIAE 2020/Pongo Edizioni

The earth is pulsing
The wind is whispery
The wildlife reigns
The people hold on

I talk with my eyes
I eat with my hands
I drink water from mud
I sleep on a stone

I hear the beat of Africa, and I start to think
I hear the beat of Africa, and I start to smile
I hear the beat of Africa, and I start to sing
I hear the beat of Africa, and I start to dance

The rain is birth
The sun is life
The sky’s wide open
The stars are so near

She’s the fever
She’s the cure
She’s the roots of my tree
She’s the mother of all

I hear the beat of Africa, and I start to think
I hear the beat of Africa, and I start to smile
I hear the beat of Africa, and I start to sing
I hear the beat of Africa, and I start to dance
